    Philosophy:

    CarBahn software is designed to deliver the highest safe output possible. Smooth Power means software tuned correctly, not over-tuned. We always try to make a natural torque curve, not excessive torque at low RPM that falls off rapidly at high RPM. Excessive torque will break the tires loose, break the engine and drivetrain. Managed torque with a smooth delivery makes the car easier to drive thereby faster and more reliable. Most if not all our competitor tunes attempt to run too much boost, resulting in active knock corrections which causes surging during acceleration. CarBahn software also incorporates torque reduction in 1st and 2nd gears for manageable power delivery.

    Durability:

    Most if not all tunes on the market except CarBahn reduce safety parameters in the software in an attempt to extract more power. These safety parameters such as knock control sensitivity, super knocking control sensitivity, and catalyst thermal protection are tuned into your OEM software to prevent engine and catalyst failure. When we reduced all the supposed power robbing software protections we lost less than 8 HP and 8 LB/FT Torque. We have seen many damaged engines as result of reducing these safety parameters! It hardly seems worth it for 8HP.

    Doing it yourself:

    A note on self-tuning tools. There are now programs available that you can buy to tune your car yourself. Many of these tools come with canned programs. Be careful as tuning a high output engine requires tremendous knowledge and experience to extract maximum power without damage.

    Emissions legality:

    A note on down pipes (removing the catalyst). We have run back to back dyno runs with the cat on and off and the power gain is much smaller than most people claim. We all need to breathe the air. Its difficult to get your car its required emissions test without catalyst and it’s illegal.

    High boost with stock engine:

    We have seen many damaged engines as result of making too much power with a stock engine. While modern engines are very reliable, it is easy to add large turbochargers and water methanol injection and break the engine. On the F8X, maximum safe power on a stock engine is 600 LB/FT flywheel torque. CarBahn makes high performance engines designed to handle more power. More information is available on this web site.

    Dual Heat exchangers

    CarBahn Dual heat exchangers very efficient additional heat exchangers are tied into the intercooler heat exchanger circuit to extract more heat from the intercoolers. They are designed to compensate for additional heat generated by increased boost. The reduced in temperature is a must to extract maximum power and ensure reliability of the engine with High boost applications. In addition, they are very light weight compared to other units on the market. This is important to maintain proper weight distribution since they are mounted on the nose of the car.

    Philosophy: Intelligent software CarBahn intelligent software has the ability to adapt to a large range of fuels octanes. Out software keeps all safety features and the ability to adapt smoothly form 91 octene to 100 octane and because it can adapt and still make maximum power with each octane you do not need to purchase a custom tune if you are running race gas! It is designed to deliver the highest safe output possible. Smooth Power means software tuned correctly, not over-tuned. We always try to make a natural torque curve, not excessive torque at low RPM that falls off rapidly at high RPM. Excessive torque will break the tires loose, break the engine and drivetrain. Managed torque with a smooth delivery makes the car easier to drive thereby faster and more reliable. Most if not all our competitor tunes attempt to run too much boost, and then compromise reliability by reducing knock sensitivity and thermal protections in an attempt to extract extra power which can cause engine damage.  

    Dual Heat exchangers CarBahn Dual heat exchangers very efficient additional heat exchangers are tied into the intercooler heat exchanger circuit to extract more heat from the intercoolers. They are designed to compensate for additional heat generated by increased boost. The reduced in temperature is a must to extract maximum power and ensure reliability of the engine with High boost applications. In addition, they are very light weight compared to other units on the market. This is important to maintain proper weight distribution since they are mounted on the nose of the car.

    Doing it yourself: A note on self-tuning tools. There are now programs available that you can buy to tune your car yourself. Many of these tools come with canned programs. Be careful as tuning a high output engine requires tremendous knowledge and experience to extract maximum power without damage.  

    Emissions legality: A note on down pipes (removing the catalyst). We have run back-to-back dyno runs with the cat on and off and the power gain is much smaller than most people claim usually around 11hp. We all need to breathe the air. It is difficult to get your car its required emissions test without catalyst and it is illegal.

The CarBahn Autoworks Caster Adjuster Assembly replaces the rubber bushings in the stock thrust arms with sealed precision ball joints inside machined aluminum housings. As a result of eliminating the deflection that is inherent in rubber bushings, braking stability is improved, and the tendency for the car to follow ruts in the road (especially with wider wheels and tires) is reduced. As an added benefit, the bearings are mounted eccentrically to give approximately 2.1 degrees of adjustable caster range. Unlike most other bearings on the market, the bearings inside the Caster Adjuster are nylon-lined for quiet operation, and are sealed against water and debris intrusion for longevity.

All this flex in the stock suspension links cause the car to be unstable when cornering and pushing on the limits of acceleration. CarBahn eliminates this flex by replacing the rubber bushings with Teflon coated machined steel rod ends.

  • CBF8X-2010 – CSF Auxiliary Radiators for S55

    CSF designed the coolers to be a true “Drop-in Fit” for easy installation. Each cooler mounts in the factory location and uses the OEM quick connections. The High-Performance Auxiliary Radiators work in conjunction with the rest of the cooling system to reduce temperatures. They not only help keep temperatures in optimal ranges but prolong the heat soak threshold. There’s nothing worse than having your track session cut short because you need to do a cooldown lap. This is particularly important if you track the car. 

    Like the other cooling systems on the F8X, the factory auxiliary radiators do a pretty good job in stock form. However, once you start adding a lot of power and pushing the car in aggressive driving conditions, the factory systems start to show its limitations. As more and more owners have pushed the limits of their S55, CSF saw the need and demand. The F8X platform is also almost a decade old with the newest examples being at least 5 years old. Over time the original coolers end up with damaged or clogged fins that greatly reduce their cooling capacity. CarBahn is proud to offer CSF’s upgrade to this unit.     If you are planning a large power increase with bigger turbos, Carbahn Autoworks has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by pinning the cam sprocket to the crankshaft.

     

    This Engine Incudes: Forged Carrillo Rods, Forged CP Pistons, CarBahn Pinned crankshaft, Full circle main bearing, high performance valve springs, labor and machine work to install them into the block.

    Stage 1, S55 High performance engine: F80 M3, F82 F83 M4, F87 M2C

    The S55 engine is not designed to take a large increase in boost beyond the OEM spec. Due to the design of the crankshaft, it is known to have the timing chain sprocket spin on the end of the crankshaft, causing the cams to go out of time. In extreme cases, the valves can hit the pistons, causing catastrophic damage. Furthermore, the S55 only has half of a normal crankshaft thrust bearing.

    To ensure durability we pin the timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft, machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods and forged CP pistons and CarBahn high-performance valve springs.

    The stock engine compression ratio is relatively high due to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards which push for consistently higher fuel economy in cars and trucks. However, this increased compression limits engine performance with higher boost settings by decreasing the size of the fuel-air charge in the combustion chamber, forcing the ignition timing to retard far below MBT (mean best timing, the theoretical optimal ignition timing). Therefore, the CarBahn S55 engine has 0.5 less compression to optimize the engine for the increased boost. In an emissions-legal street car, the lowered compression has the added benefit of reducing catalyst inlet temperatures and improved drive-ability on pump gas.

    CarBahn has developed a Crank Hub Kit for the S55 Engine, designed to prevent the timing gear from slipping and spinning independently from the crank.

    The Stock Crank Hub design allows the timing gear to spin independently from the crank causing the user to get the engine re-timed at a minimum and in worst case scenario cause piston to valve contact damaging the engine and requiring a complete engine overhaul.

    CarBahn Crank Hub Kit is unique in that it has a two locking pins similar to a crankshaft keyway. The CarBahn pins is not in sheer and does not suffer from oscillations associated with most crank pins. This design has been used by CarBahn High Performance Engines and before that by Dinan since 2010 in both street and race engine applications with no failures.

    Most aftermarket crank hubs have multiple pins that are in sheer. During major and minor harmonics associated with an internal combustion engine the crank hub will oscillate and cause excessive load on the pins in sheer. This can damage the pins resulting in failure over time. Steve Dinan has been building BMW race engines for over 40 years! This vast experience has led us to this design.

    Crank Hub Kit uses modified BMW OEM sprockets keeping the metallurgical properties of the crank hub the same as the OEM BMW parts hence maintaining the durability same as the OEM part.

    We include high performance valve springs with our engine, however you can purchase the springs separately. Our springs increase valve spring pressure by 20%. We also keep the steel retainers for long term durability.

     

    Steve Dinan has been building racing and high performance road car engines for over 40 years. We are concerned about the trend in high performance valve springs on the new S55, S58 and B58 engines. Companies are selling springs with very high spring rates that will rob power and dramatically increase valve train wear.

     

    Theory

    The goal of a valve spring pressure is to make it as low as possible. This is because compressing a spring takes energy and robs potential power. In addition, more valve spring pressure increases valve train wear. We work very hard at running just enough valve spring pressure to keep the follower in contact with the camshaft but no more. If you increase the RPM you increase the valve spring just enough to manage the inertia from the increased RPM. The valve spring also needs enough seat pressure and the correct frequency not to bounce when the valve is closed. This is to avoid leaking trapped mass (the fuel air charge).

     

    Boosted engine

    With a boosted engine you will need a slight increase in pressure to push back against the boost pressure in the intake trying to hold the valve open. This amount of pressure added is much less than the pressure to control the inertia of the valve train.

     

    Conclusion

    If you double the boost pressure you do not need to double the spring pressure since only about 20% of the spring pressure is to control the boost pressure and 80% is to control the valve train mass. An additional 20% of valve spring pressure is all you need to run.

The Forgeline RB1 one piece monoblock wheel features a concave 10-spoke design with a subtle directional twist on each spoke, so each set includes unique left and right versions. The RB1 also utilizes Forgeline’s I-beam technology along each spoke and along the front lip between spokes to reduce mass and enhance strength & rigidity. The one-piece monoblock forging and computer-simulated FEA design process yield a wheel that is lightweight, extremely stiff, and has excellent fatigue strength.

    The Forgeline RB1 one piece monoblock wheel is machined from a single forging of 6061-T6 aluminum. It is currently available in 18, 19, 20, and 21-inch diameters with a range of widths and offsets.
